Spiti Valley Weather in November 2026: Is It Open, Safe & Worth It?

In November, Spiti goes into winter mode. Nights drop well below zero, the roads empty out, and the valley goes quiet in a way summer visitors never see. It’s a stunning trip if you’re prepared for it and a miserable one if you’re not.

Quick Answer

  • Weather: Freezing nights across the valley, with bright, cold days. It gets colder in the last week of the month.

  • Snow: Likely at higher villages like Langza and Komic. The valley floor can be snowy or dry and brown, depending on the year.

  • Roads: As of mid-October 2026, snowfall closed the Manali–Kaza route. The Shimla–Kinnaur–Kaza route is the usual way in during winter.

  • Key Monastery: The main sight near Kaza. You usually visit it from Kaza, but fresh snow can slow the road, so confirm locally before you go.

  • Verdict: Great for winter lovers, photographers, and experienced travelers. Hard for first-timers and anyone on a fixed schedule.

Altitudes are approximate.

Published numbers disagree, so here is what has actually been recorded. An early-November Himachal Met update, reported by The Tribune, listed Kukumseri village in Lahaul and Spiti as the coldest place at -1.9°C. By the end of November, Tabo recorded a minimum of -8°C. Modelled climate averages tend to run colder than on-ground reports, so plan for nights well below zero rather than relying on any single figure.

What Spiti Looks Like in November

Don’t assume everything is white. At 4,400 m and above, villages like Langza, Hikkim, and Komic usually have snow by now. Lower down, the Spiti Valley floor can be a dry, brown, moonlike desert with a dusting of white on the ridges.

It depends on the year. November 2025 was Himachal’s ninth driest since 1901, with just 1 mm of rain against a normal of 19.7 mm. This year looks different: heavy snowfall in mid-October closed Shinku La, Baralacha La, and Kunzum Pass to all vehicles. That doesn’t tell us what November will bring, so check the forecast the week you travel.

Snow changes everything on the ground. Drive times stretch, homestays run on limited heating, and a single storm can change your plan.

Road Conditions: Manali–Kaza and Shimla–Kinnaur–Kaza

Manali–Kaza (via Kunzum Pass) is the route that closes. In mid-October 2026, district disaster authorities reported the Manali–Kaza road closed due to snowfall, with Kunzum Top among the high passes shut. Kunzum sits at roughly 4,550 m and can close any time from October, usually staying shut until spring.

Closures can be partial. Last year the pass was cut off from 6 October by heavy snow and later reopened only for light 4x4 vehicles. Don’t build a trip around a reopening. The Atal Tunnel speeds up the Rohtang section, but the closure is further on at Kunzum, so it doesn’t solve the problem.

Shimla–Kinnaur–Kaza is the winter route. The Kaza–Tabo–Shimla route is generally described as open all year. That doesn’t mean trouble-free. Snow and landslides can delay you, especially around Kinnaur, so keep at least one buffer day.

On the ground:

  • Cash: The SBI ATM in Kaza is often non-functional in winter, so carry cash.

  • Fuel: Petrol pumps are at Reckong Peo, Tabo, and Kaza. Fill up at each chance.

  • Stays: Most hotels in Spiti shut for winter, so book a heated homestay ahead.

  • Network: Patchy outside Kaza. Download maps offline.

Can You Visit Spiti in November? Open, Safe, and Worth It?

In its favor: Dramatic winter landscapes, clear skies, very few crowds, and low light pollution that makes for good stargazing and photography.

Against it:

  • Sub-zero nights, and some homestays and cafés are closed.

  • Water pipes can freeze, so washrooms and hot water can be unreliable.

  • Roads can be delayed or closed, and you can lose a day or two.

  • Vehicles can be slow to start in the cold.

Good for: Winter lovers, photographers, and experienced high-altitude travelers with flexible dates.

Not for: first-timers, tight schedules, small kids, and older relatives. If any of those are you, wait for summer.

What to See in November: Kaza, Key Monastery, Langza, and Pin Valley

Kaza is your base for everything in the valley.

Key Monastery (Kye Gompa) is the one-stop you shouldn’t miss. It sits on a hilltop about 12 km from Kaza, at roughly 4,100 m, overlooking the Spiti River. It is the largest monastery in the valley and a training center for Buddhist monks of the Gelug tradition. In winter, the whitewashed buildings stand out against the brown or snowy slopes, and with very few visitors it feels quiet in a way you won’t get in summer. Fresh snow can slow the drive up from Kaza, and the monastery itself can be bitterly cold, so go in the middle of the day and dress for it.

Langza, Hikkim, and Komic are the classic high villages. They’re usually reachable from Kaza, but fresh snow can close the access roads for a day or more.

Pin Valley is more exposed, and the road in can be blocked after snowfall, so ask locally before heading in.

Safety Tips for Sub-Zero Conditions

Altitude first. Kaza is about 3,800 m. Headache, nausea, dizziness, and poor sleep are common in the first days, so acclimatize and don’t rush. Breathlessness at rest, confusion, or loss of balance means you should descend and get medical help immediately.

Cold injuries. Watch for shivering that won’t stop, slurred speech or clumsiness (hypothermia), and numb, waxy, or white skin on fingers, toes, nose, and ears (frostbite). Get warm and dry, and don’t rub frostbitten skin.

Plan around the weather. Check that your stay has heating and hot water before booking. Carry cash and fuel up often. Keep at least one or two buffer days for road delays.

If you have a heart, lung, or blood-pressure condition, talk to your doctor before booking.
