If snow is the main reason you're planning a Kashmir trip, January and February are the months I would look at first. December can work well for an early winter trip, while March is still worth considering if you're happy to look for snow in higher areas.
There is one thing to keep in mind before you book your dates: Kashmir doesn't work on a fixed snowfall calendar. You can choose the right month and still not get fresh snow on the exact day you arrive.
So the better question isn't simply, “When does it snow in Kashmir?”
It is: When should I go, and which places give me the best chance of getting the snowy Kashmir experience I'm after?
If I were planning a Kashmir trip mainly for snow, this is how I'd look at the months:
|
Month |
What You Can Expect |
Best For |
|
December |
Winter starts setting in, with snow possible in higher areas. |
Early winter |
|
January |
Proper winter conditions and snow in higher destinations |
Snow-focused trips |
|
February |
Snowy landscapes and winter activities |
Snow + activities |
|
March |
Snow can remain at higher elevations. |
Seeing leftover winter snow |
|
April onwards |
Snow becomes less widespread. |
Not ideal for a snowfall-focused trip |
JKTDC describes Kashmir's winter season as running roughly from December to early March. Gulmarg's skiing season generally starts around mid-December and can continue until mid-April, depending on snow conditions.
That difference is important. Snow can remain in Gulmarg well after winter conditions have started easing elsewhere.
If you have only one month to choose from, January is a sensible starting point.
This is the part of the year when Kashmir feels most like a proper winter destination. Higher places are where you'll have the best chance of finding established snow, and Gulmarg becomes particularly attractive.
Gulmarg is a major winter sports destination, with skiing and other snow activities forming a big part of the season. JKTDC also notes its heavy winter snowfall.
For a January trip, I'd plan around:
Gulmarg
Snow-covered mountain scenery
Winter activities
Enough time for weather-related changes
One correction to the usual travel advice, though: January does not guarantee snowfall on your travel dates.
You may see a lot of snow without actually watching it fall.
February is another very good month, particularly if you want more than photographs of snow.
Gulmarg's established winter season makes it a natural choice for skiing, snowboarding, and other activities.
I'd choose February if the plan is something like
Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam, with enough flexibility to adjust plans according to the weather.
For many travellers, that is a better winter trip than trying to squeeze too many destinations into a few days.
December is where I'd be a little more careful with expectations.
Winter is beginning, and Gulmarg's skiing season generally starts around mid-December.
But early December and late December can feel quite different.
So if you're travelling in December, think of it as an early-winter Kashmir trip with a chance of snowfall, rather than booking purely on the assumption that you'll find heavy snow everywhere.
If your dates are flexible and snow is the whole point of the trip, I'd personally look at January or February first.
Yes.
March doesn't mean the snow suddenly disappears. Higher areas can still hold plenty of it, particularly around destinations such as Gulmarg.
The difference is that winter conditions become less consistent across the region.
So March makes sense if your goal is to see snow, but I'd be less confident recommending it to someone whose only goal is to watch fresh snowfall.
This is something I think travellers should know before booking a package.
Kashmir isn't one big weather zone.
Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and the higher mountain areas can have very different conditions on the same day.
That's why simply searching for “Kashmir snowfall” isn't enough when you're deciding where to stay.
For a dedicated snow trip, Gulmarg would be my first choice.
Its altitude, winter conditions, and established skiing season make it one of the strongest options in Kashmir for snow. JKTDC lists skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities among the area's attractions.
If you have always wanted to see a proper snowy Kashmir landscape, this is the place I'd give more time to.
The higher areas around Kongdori and Apharwat are also associated with winter activities and snow-covered terrain.
Pahalgam is worth including, but I wouldn't treat it as a direct replacement for Gulmarg.
It's better thought of as part of the overall mountain experience. Depending on the weather and timing, you can find beautiful winter scenery, but there is no sensible way to promise fresh snowfall for a particular date.
Sonamarg can be heavily snow-covered during winter.
The catch is accessibility.
Snow and road conditions can affect travel, so I'd check the situation closer to the date before making Sonamarg a fixed part of a tight itinerary.
Srinagar is different again.
It makes a very useful base and has plenty to do, but I wouldn't choose Srinagar alone if snowfall is the main reason you're visiting Kashmir.
Pairing Srinagar with Gulmarg gives you a much better balance.
This is probably the most useful thing to understand before booking a Kashmir snow trip.
Let's say you reach Gulmarg one day after a snowfall.
The next morning is sunny.
You haven't technically seen snowfall, but you are surrounded by snow.
Now imagine arriving on a cloudy day when there is no snow on the ground, but snow starts falling while you're there.
You've experienced snowfall, but you may not have the same amount of accumulated snow around you.
Both are winter experiences. They are simply different.
This matters because travellers sometimes book their entire holiday around a particular snowfall forecast.
I wouldn't do that.
Weather forecasts can help you plan, but they cannot promise exactly what Kashmir will look like on a particular morning.
If your goal is simply to see snow, choosing January or February and spending time in higher destinations is a much more practical approach.
You don't need two weeks.
For a first winter trip, 4 to 6 nights is a comfortable range.
Keep it simple:
Srinagar → Gulmarg → Pahalgam → Srinagar
This gives you enough time for the main places without constantly packing and unpacking.
You have a little more breathing room. You can slow down the itinerary or consider another destination if the weather and roads allow it.
This is the option I'd prefer for a relaxed winter trip.
The extra day isn't necessarily about seeing another place. It gives you some room when the weather doesn't cooperate.
That's useful in January and February.
Winter travel isn't difficult by default, but it does require a little more planning.
Snow and ice can affect road movement, and journey times can change. Outdoor activities can also depend on conditions on the day.
So don't make an itinerary where one delayed journey ruins the next three days.
For example, if a gondola ride or snow activity in Gulmarg is important to you, don't make the entire holiday dependent on one specific time slot.
Check the latest operating information closer to your travel date.
And keep some space in the itinerary.
You don't need to take everything you own.
Layers are more useful than one extremely heavy jacket.
I'd pack:
Thermal innerwear
Fleece or woollen sweater
Warm jacket
Waterproof outer layer
Woollen socks
Gloves
Warm cap
Waterproof shoes
Shoes with good grip
Sunglasses
Lip balm
Moisturiser
Personal medicines
Power bank
Snow and wet surfaces aren't kind to ordinary sneakers.
A waterproof pair with decent grip will be much more useful than fashionable shoes that get soaked after a short walk.
There are really three decisions to make.
Want to watch snow falling?
That's weather-dependent.
Want to walk through snow and photograph snowy mountains?
That's much easier to plan for.
If snow is the main purpose of the trip, don't treat Gulmarg as a quick day stop just because it's on the route.
Give yourself time to actually experience the place.
Winter is not the season for an itinerary where every day runs according to the minute.
A little flexibility can make the difference between a stressful trip and a comfortable one.
Yes, provided you're comfortable with winter travel.
The appeal isn't only the snow.
Gulmarg becomes a major winter sports destination, higher areas take on a different look, and even the way you plan your days changes.
But there is a trade-off.
You get the chance to experience Kashmir covered in snow, but you also have to deal with cold weather, changing road conditions, and unpredictable snowfall.
For me, that's a fair trade if snow is the reason for the trip.
If I had to choose the timing, January and February are my first picks.
January and February are generally the best months to consider for a snow-focused Kashmir trip. Actual snowfall varies by year and location.
Yes, particularly later in December. However, snowfall is not guaranteed on specific dates.
Yes. January is part of Kashmir's winter season, although the timing and amount of snowfall vary.
Yes. February falls within Gulmarg's established winter season and is a good time for snow and winter activities.
Gulmarg is one of the strongest choices for a dedicated snow trip because of its higher terrain, winter conditions, and established skiing season.
Yes. Snow can remain at higher elevations, although conditions become less consistent as winter moves towards spring.
Srinagar can receive snowfall during winter, but don't rely on the city alone if snow is the main purpose of your trip. Include a higher destination such as Gulmarg.
4 to 6 nights is a practical starting point. More days give you greater flexibility if weather affects your plans.
Thermal layers, a warm jacket, gloves, woollen socks, a cap, and waterproof footwear are the basics I'd recommend.
Yes. Snow and winter weather can affect road conditions and journey times. Check the latest conditions before travelling between destinations.
Choosing the right month is only one part of planning a Kashmir snow trip.
The route, time spent at each destination, and flexibility around winter weather matter just as much.
